The Heroes are on the hunt for Eliath, a wizened mage who's gone missing in the Hive; the Fated believe he holds the key to a portal of interest, and they need him alive. Investigation leads them to the seediest parts of the Hive, and to the realization that someone is killing random people on the streets, with no apparent motive.
A short meeting with Collectors on the job reveals that Eliath was one of the victims, and he's already been brought to the Mortuary for "disposal". With night falling, the Heroes go back to their gathering place, a nasty tavern called the Fetid Pit. There they're confronted by a group of Bleakers, led by Derioch Sarl. The woman is suspicious of the Heroes, believing they've something to do with the murders. The situation is rapidly defused with diplomacy, and the two parties agree on helping each other.
Calling it a night, the Heroes leave the tavern, but are ambushed on the streets by a party of Xaositecs, for reasons unknown. After a short but intense fight, the Heroes put the leatherheads in the dead-book, and rapidly leave the scene.
On their way to Aonar's case, Vaako and the dragonborn stumble on one more attack: a group of bashers, led by an half-elven spellslinger, assault a barmy, and kill him with a single spell, then leave him for the Collectors to find. Aonar and Vaako decide to collect the body themselves, and bring him with them.
