Heroes: Meghera, Tarabas, Aonar, Vaako, Sarvaas
By beating the law-makers at their own game, the Heroes manage to get admission into the town, and begin their investigation to find Heiron the Lifegiver, the wizard who created the magic Book. Their search brings them first to the wizard's former shop, now used by a smoked meat vendor. There they learn that Heiron made himself scarce a few weeks before, and hasn't been seen since.
At the Divine Machine, a halfling-friendly tavern in Automata, they find out that Heiron was on the run from the Council of Anarchy, a gang of barmies looking to destabilize Automata's government. They also meet one of Heiron's old friends, a female tiefling. After making sure the Heroes are not with the Council of Anarchy, and having seen the Book they carry, she points the Heroes to Heiron's hiding place: the wizard is hiding inside a closet in the Main Building of the Council of Order, thanks to a Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion spell.
The Heroes fast-talk their way inside the building as official closet inspectors (!), where they manage to find Heiron. He invites them in his magical mansion, where they can enjoy a nice meal. But soon the mansion begins to dissolve around them, as the leader of the Council of Anarchy's thugs, a powerful elven wizard, has followed the Heroes and has dispelled Heiron's magic!
When they're ejected in the halls of the Council of Order, they must face the Anarchists. The Heroes take care of the mooks, while Heiron and the elf exchange powerful spells, wreaking much havoc to the building.
But soon even the powerful spellslinger are struck with awe. With the side wall partially gone, they have a clear view on the streets of Automata, and on the portal to Mechanus. From this, a veritable army of modrons in pouring forth, ranks upon ranks of monodrones, duodrones, and more.
The Heroes take advantage of the situation to finish the thug's off, and Meghera stabs the elven wizard one last time, toppling her to a deadly fall. When they also witness the modrons parading down the streets, Heiron explains to them what is going on: the Great Modron March has begun... 150 years too early!
Still uncertain of the implications, and having performed their quest to satisfaction, the Heroes return to Sigil with the thanks of both Heiron and his magical book (oh, and the cat too!).
