Heroes: Meghera, Tarabas, Aonar, Vaako, Sarvaas
With a convincing deception, the Heroes manage to retrieve Aonar still alive, but they soon realize that they're not safe while they remain in the Citadel. They decide to leave, to come back and complete their exploration in the near future. When they cross the portal to return to the Mortuary, they find a strong force of Dustmen and undead waiting for them.
Factol Skall |
Factol Skall is summoned, and after hearing the Heroes' story, he only hasa few words for them: "End it". The Heroes realize that there will be no welcome for them in the Mortuary until the Citadel stands, and they go back to the Elemental Plane of Fire.
They meet the last living members of the Illuminated in the main temple, where the jewel protecting the Citadel from the searing flames of the plane is kept. During the fight, Vaako decides to remove the jewel from the altar, and runs away as fast as he can. Immediately, the temperature in the Citadel rises, becoming soon unbearable. The Heroes hurry to the portal, their skin slowly burning away from their flesh and bones!
They manage to reach the portal without any losses from their side, though the Illuminated and the Citadel itself are not so lucky. Confronted again with Skall, the factol states he will not persecute them for their intrusion, in view of the service they've rendered by uncovering the Illuminated's plot. Still, they've reached the limit of his mercy, and they best leave immediately. The Heroes, looking back at Toranna, now a zombie in the ranks of the Dustmen, gather whatever they looted from the Citadel, and leave.
* * *
Thanks to the riches found in the Citadel, the Heroes improve their lot in life, and move out of the Hive. Aonar works to establish his "cult" in Sigil, while Vaako and Meghera spend time learning a trade. Tarabas and Sarvaas enjoy the many gambling houses and brothels of the Cage.
But adventure soon comes knocking, as they all perceive a psychic call, pulling them to the Bazaar. At an abandoned clerk's office, once belonging to a man named Jysson, they find a sentient magical book, and a talking cat!
The cat was once Jysson the clerk, who had bought the magical book off of a wizard named Heiron, paying for it in installments. Before he coumd pay his debt fully, he died and was reborn as a cat in The Beastlands. Eventually, the cat came to Sigil on behalf of the Cat Lord, and realized he'd never fully paid for the book. He now feels the urge to return the book to the wizard, but he needs the Heroes to help him carry it.
The wizard who made the book lives in the gate-town of Automata, where the portal to the Plane of Mechanus lies.
The cat and the book guide the Heroes to a portal in Sigil that brings them to Automata. There, the Heroes are confronted with the many rules and codes of this extremely lawful town.
