Session 20

Heroes: Meghera, Jade, Vaako

Jade tries to make sense of the weird dream experienced by all the Heroes, but all he finds out are vague hints of a struggle between powers that have fought each other in the past. With more questions than answers, the Heroes turn their attention to a new trouble affecting Sigil.

Animals have been acting weirdly of late, attacking citizens for no reason, and raging uncontrollably. Many bashers in Sigil (including the Heroes) have also experienced dark dreams where they are hunted by felines of huge proportions, and ripped apart by their fangs and claws.

On the streets of Sigil, the Heroes are approached by a barmy named Sashell, rattling his bone-box about "spirit-stealing killers walking through triangles" looking for him. He also mentions an inn called the Slumbering Lamb, most probably his current abode. As they try to make sense of his gibberish, a githzerai assassin tries to silence the madman with a poisoned arrow. While Meghera flies in pursuit of the assassin, Sashell transforms into a fearsome tiger, and tries to rend Jade and Vaako apart. When the tiger is knocked out, and Meghera returns with her quarry, the assassin claims that Sashell is a weretiger, a beast who has killed many githzerai back in Limbo. He was sent to Sigil to kill the beast, and asks to be released. The Heroes hand the githzerai over to the Harmonium, and kill the tiger. From its corpse, they retrieve a pendant of black stone shaped like a triangle.

They visit the Slumbering Lamb, where they inspect Sashell's room. The place is a mess, full of garbage, broken furniture, and scraps of paper. Among the chaos, the Heroes find Sashell's journal, the notes of a man's descent into madness and paranoia. Still, from the journal they gather additional information.

While they rest for dinner, a Mercykiller paladin name Blander Mul strolls into the tavern with his Aoskan hound, barely keeping control of the enraged beast. Without the approval of his own faction, the zealous paladin wishes to inform Sigil's citizen of a possible threat: a number of dangerous cutters have escaped the Prison, and may be running loose. Mul seeks help in order to find the fugitives, and bring them back to the Prison. When the Heroes inquiry about the fugitives, they realise that all the names Mul gives them were also mentioned on a list in Sashell's journal: obviously, a connection  of sorts exists. The paladin tells the Heroes that they can find him every evening at the Woodsman Retreat tavern, in case they have any information for him.

Following the journal, the Heroes visit the Cup of Freedom, an open library run by the Anarchists, where they learn that Sashell has made extensive research into cats and Powers related to cats, and the Lower Planes.

At Parts & Pieces, a shop specialised in exotic creatures' parts for spell components, they learn from the dust mephit running the shop that Sashell came to him looking for a charm to protect him from cats. They also learn that mysterious hunters have visited the shop frequently, bringing parts from creatures native of Carceri, and more recently of animals of the Beastlands.

Lastly the Heroes visit the Planar Trade Consortium, one of the most powerful merchant guilds of Sigil. There they meet master Estavan, who admits of having met Sashell, albeit very shortly. He was making inquiries about hunters selling animals. When Jade shows the black triangle pendant he took from Sashell to Estavan, the merchant attitude changes, seemingly recognising the pendant as a proof that the Heroes have been sent by one of his "clients". When they play along and pretend his observation is correct, he informs them that the next shipment will be ready the day after, to be picked up at the campus behind the Hall of Records at noon. Having learned what to do next, and fearing that prolonging their stay will arise suspicion, they leave.
